Florida Institute of Technology (or Florida Tech) is known as Florida’s STEM university. Their main majors are aeronautics and aviation, business, engineering and computing, arts and humanities, pre-law, pre-med, psychology and behavior, and science and math. They are located in Melbourne, FL on the Space Coast just 10 minutes from the beach. Florida Institute of Technology is home to about 3500 undergraduates and 2000 graduates. They are a private university that ranks in the top 200 universities in the US and the world. 1/3 of their students come from Florida, 1/3 come from out of state, and 1/3 are international. Florida Tech was founded by a NASA engineer in 1958.
Florida Tech has four different colleges: aeronautics, business, engineering/science, and psychology/liberal arts. Some concentrations in the business school that would appeal to my students include entrepreneurship, marketing, and sport management. In the engineering school, they offer an ocean engineering major and have a very strong aerospace program, two majors that are not found in many other schools. One of the benefits of FIT is that it is a direct admit school. This means students can apply directly for their major and start in those courses immediately. This also brings their average graduation rate to 4.1 years while the national average is 5.6 years according to the admissions representative. Another benefit of starting classes in your major earlier is that you will figure out earlier if you want to change your major, thus helping you graduate on time. Don't miss the pictures of the 15-acre Botanical Garden in the middle of campus!
