Rhode Island School of Design

Providence, RI

Providence, RI

The Rhode Island School of Design is located in Providence just one hour south of Boston and three hours north of NYC. Providence is small, urban, and a city where it’s easy to get around. The city’s creative culture is a perfect place to study art and design.

At RISD, all first year students are placed in the Experimental and Foundation Studies Program where students with all different backgrounds and skills are placed in groups of twenty students. These groups learn together throughout the year as they take intro classes together. RISD has over 80,000 specimens of taxidermy, plant, and animal skeletons for their students to study. Campus is made up of over 50 buildings including a full wood shop, metal shop, and model making shop. As you might expect, students at RISD do mainly hands on, experiential learning, and there are multiple gallery spaces. There is a wide breadth of studios that are drastically different and unique. Students work with all sorts of materials, from state of the art tools to found objects.
