University of Connecticut
Storrs, CT
One of the things that really stands out to me about UConn is the feeling of belonging. They have a few key slogans that express this sentiment including, “Students today, huskies forever,” “Every husky becomes part of the pack,” and “It’s on. On, together.” The University of Connecticut is a large research institution (ranked #23 in the country this year according to U.S. News and World Report) with over 24,000 students across their five campuses. However, they really engender a feeling of belonging. It is not only through their slogans, but it is also through one-on-one attention that students are able to get from their professors. The student to teacher ratio is 16:1, which was surprising to me for such a large school. On top of that, professors have an open-door policy ranging from four to six hours each week when students can drop in for help or to discuss class topics. Students also have at least one advisor who is constantly there for them. Even though UConn is a large school, it is comprised of ten smaller colleges.
When I asked what the average GPA is of entering students, the tour guide said it was between a B+ to an A-, or 85% to 90%. Last year 3700 first year students were accepted from the 38,000 who applied! The Princeton Reviews calls UConn a "very selective school." The University of Connecticut is test optional again this coming year, and they have decided to stay that way for at least three more years.
One of the great things about the University of Connecticut is that it is so large and diverse that myriad personality types can find success there. The fact that 93% of first year students return for their second year really illustrates the fact that many types of students have found the right fit. UConn was originally an agricultural school, but they still have their own dairy farm and make amazing ice cream that they sell at a shop on campus. As the 2023 Fiske Guide states, "Those seeking greener pastures will be hard-pressed to find a more dynamic public institution."
It’s a beautiful campus at all times of the year! Go, Huskies!
